A key element of business success is to have good communication skills, and it is no different with a home business. Communication is how you grow your business whether online or off. The main difference is how you are communicating. With a home based business your main methods for communication are through writing. You want to ensure that your writing is about helping people not just a sales pitch.
When using email for communicating, you want to be professional, but at the same time you don't want to come across in a threatening or overbearing manner. You want to convey what your business is, but not be a sales pitch. A great method is to simply add a signature to the bottom of your emails that includes your name, company name and web site, and a quick description of what your business does. This method gets your message out, but you are not selling anything. The recipient has the option of following through with looking at your site.
Using messenger services is a good way to communicate with potential customers. It is a good idea to have an account with the bigger messenger companies (Yahoo, MSN, AIM, etc.) as it does limit or require your customer to open new accounts just to communicate with you. In today's age, most computers have at least one messenger service. The great thing about messenger services is it gives the customer direct contact with you in a non-threatening environment. Set up a common name and have it applicable to your business. Do not use a personal service, but have it just for business.
Skype is becoming a good way to communicate with your clients, they can set up appointments with you through email, then talk directly to you. It allows you to talk without giving out your personal information. Skype is a good to have as many people want to know that you are a real person, rather than a computer generated message.
The essence of business communication is the same, you need to be professional and approachable to your clients and customers. By integrating the three above methods into your home business, you are meeting the needs of both your personal life and business communication needs.
